Syllabus and Exams
I work with the ‘Making the Grade’ series of piano books (published by Chester Music) which have a good range of popular songs suitable for all ages. The books are designed to run parallel to the Associated Board piano syllabus which allows the student the opportunity to consider taking exams if they wish at any point. In addition, I will introduce other selected pieces to ensure students get as wide a repertoire as possible.
As well as practical piano exams, I would encourage students to take the Associated Board theory exams, ensuring that the understanding of music keeps up with practical playing. Theory is always taught in a positive, interactive way. There is no pressure on any student to take exams if they don’t want to.
Students often request to play other songs of their choice. I have no problem with this, as long as the piece matches the students’ capabilities.
